Cancer research funding available in Ireland

The Irish Cancer Society is the national charity dedicated to cancer prevention, care, research, and education. The strategic targets of the Irish Cancer Society (2008-2012) are: prevention of smoking in young people, early detection of colorectal cancer and fighting cancer through information and support (including psycho-oncology).

We are the single largest voluntary supporter of cancer research in Ireland and are dedicated to promoting patient-relevant cancer research.

A) Funds available from the Irish Cancer Society

Research Funding opportunities for 2010 have been announced. The Irish Cancer Society has issued a call for Applications to their Fellowship and Scholarship schemes for 2010.

Applicants must apply using the online application form, which will be accessible on the cri.cancer.ie website.

Research Fellowships

The Irish Cancer Society invites applications for Irish Cancer Society Research Fellowships for 2010. Applications in line with our strategic targets and other areas of cancer research are sought. All applications will be assessed on merit, and awarded on excellence.

The Fellowship scheme is particularly suitable for:

  • untenured postdoctoral scientists
  • medical doctors in training
  • nurses and other researchers

with a post-graduate degree, a further minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 years research experience, and a commitment to developing a career in cancer research.

The total value of the Irish Cancer Society Research fellowship covering salary and materials will be up to €75,000 per year for a maximum of three years. Applicants will need to choose a research area of specific interest for them and identify a suitable mentor to collaborate with on writing the proposal.

Research Scholarships

The Irish Cancer Society invites applications for Irish Cancer Society Research Scholarships for 2010. Applications involving any of the following research areas are welcome: Epidemiology, Prevention, Laboratory, Clinical, Translational and Health Services Research. Applications in line with our strategic targets and and in other areas of cancer research are sought All applications will be assessed on merit, and awarded on excellence.

The Scholarship scheme is open to:

  • science graduates
  • medical doctors
  • nurses and other researchers

with less than 5 years post-graduate experience who have not registered, but propose to commence a PhD and have a minimum of a first or upper second class honours primary degree or equivalent.

The total value of the Irish Cancer Society Research Scholarship covering stipend, fees and materials will be up to €40,000 per year for a maximum of three years. Applicants will need to choose a research area of specific interest for them and identify a suitable supervisor to collaborate with on writing the proposal.
