The Cancer Helpline was established in 1987 and is a resource that provides advice, support and information to those concerned or affected by cancer. Last year our team of helpline nurses dealt with almost seven thousand callers. Callers' enquiries ranged from questions concerning cancer prevention and screening to diagnosis and treatment . Patients, their partners, families, friends and health care professionals all use this service.

The Helpline can be of particular help:

  • If you need to talk to someone who is not closely involved with your cancer diagnosis and who can be objective about your specific circumstances
  • If you, as a patient / partner / family member / friend, are having difficulty coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis, what it means or what will happen next.
  • If you have questions about cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, symptom control, support groups / centres, counsellor's, coping with cancer, clinical trials or other cancer query, that you are having difficulty finding answers to through traditional methods.
  • If you would like written information sent to you for further review in the comfort of your own home, when you have the time and space to read it

In February 2003 the Irish Cancer Society Cancer Helpline was granted full membership of the UK Telephone Helplines Association (THA). This achievement recognises the commitment of the Society to the needs of callers and acknowledges the effort of the Helpline team. The Telephone Helpline Association works with organisations to ensure quality and confidence for callers to helplines.

As full members of the THA, the Irish Cancer Society is recognized as having appropriate policies, procedures and training in place. The Cancer Helpline is the first helpline in Southern Ireland to be granted full membership
