What causes cervical cancer?

There is strong evidence that the HPV   human papilloma virus is linked to cervical cancer. HPV is a very common virus that is passed on during sex. Most women will get this infection in their lifetime and it usually clears up by itself. If you smoke, it can prevent the infection from clearing up. Ongoing HPV infections can cause abnormal changes in the lining of your cervix. These changes, if left untreated, can lead to cervical cancer. Not having regular smear tests can increase your risk of getting cervical cancer too.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?

The symptoms of cervical cancer include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding. For example, bleeding in between your periods, after sex or after the menopause.
  • Blood-stained vaginal discharge that may have a foul smell.
  • Discomfort or pain in your pelvis

If you have any of the above symptoms, get them checked out by your doctor. But remember they can occur in many conditions other than cancer. For more information, contact the National Cancer Helpline
